"After the American Empire...What?
A talk with the Grandfather of Peace Studies, Johan Galtung
Johan Galtung is a Norwegian professor, working at the Transcend Institute. He is seen as the pioneer of peace and conflict research and founded the International Peace Research Institute (PRIO) in Oslo.
This event was co-sponsored with the Dean's office, the College of Arts and Sciences, IDS, the Office of Judaic, Holocaust & Peace Studies, and the Office of International Education and Development.

Community-Based Restorative Forestry
A forum lead by Jason Rutledge of Biological Woodsmen
Healing Harvest has been the regional leader in horse logging, whole forest management, and green certified "Draftwood" lumber. Their primary purpose is to train Biological Woodsmen. Local horsemen, forest workers, students and educators were invited to come together to build perspective on the sustainable forest economy of the Southern Appalachians.

Building a Sustainable Future: Our Survival Imperative
An interactive Talk was held with Dr. John Fitch, Director of Sustaining Tomorrow Today Projects and Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University. This event was cosponsored by SD with the Ecumenical Project for International Cooperation (EPIC) and the Departments of Biology, Geography and Planning, and Geology.

The North Carolina Small Wind Initiative scheduled 7 workshops throughout 2005 focused on small-scale wind power.
Each of these workshops and training seminars will be held at the Small Wind Research and Demonstration Site on Beech Mountain, NC. This facility currently features six wind systems, ranging from 400w to 20,000w, that can be replicated for home, farm, school, or business applications. All levels of interest and experience are welcome!
